The Life and Death of a Civil War Hero

Congressman John Logan resigned his congressional seat when the Civil War started and fought until the war ended, returning to Washington as member of the House of Representatives. He championed the efforts to create a day to honor the dead soldiers from the Civil War, and that day was called Decoration Day, the last Monday in May, now known as Memorial Day. This silent story shows a cemetery decorated with flags from the 1913 Decoration Day. In 1913 many surviving Civil War soldiers were around 50 years old, and in 1913, the life expectancy for men was 50.3 years, so when this movie was filmed many Civil War soldiers were near the end of life. Grandpa, played by Irish born William Desmond Taylor, is a Civil War hero living with his son and granddaughter Mildred. Mildred is played by Mildred Harris, later to marry Charlie Chaplin. Father is away on a honeymoon with his new wife, and before their return Papa sends a letter warning that his new wife is very religious and will not tolerate Grandpa's occasional nip of whiskey. Mildred and Grandpa decide to hide his bottle in the Grandfather clock so that Papa's new wife won't find out that his enjoys a nip of whiskey now and then. Well, of course the new wife discovers his whiskey bottle and orders him to get out of the house, so that night as the family is asleep Grandpa packs a few things and runs away from home. Grandpa makes his way to the County poor house where no one will find him, writing a letter to his granddaughter telling her that he got a business opportunity that would keep him away from home. The fates have determined that Father and Mildred will discover Grandpa in the poor house, and they rush to find him and bring him back to his home to finish out his days . . . maybe. Pop a little bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and after enjoying the show, pay it forward by doing something nice today for a military man or woman.
