"I guess I wasn't meant to be honest"

Olivia R. Duffy, who became silent screen star Olive Thomas, was born in 1894 in the rough and tough steel town of Charleroi, Pennsylvania, a few miles south of Pittsburgh, and like in this motion picture, she was without a father at an early age. In this story she struggles to support her two younger sisters by demonstrating a new cocoa at a drug store. In real life she left gritty Pennsylvania for New York City, where as a department store clerk her vibrant beauty was soon discovered and after posing nude for the legendary artist Alberto Vargas she became a star in the new sensation sweeping the world . . . 'moving pictures,' where she quickly rose to fame. As this story opens her father, a pickpocket and thief who has gone honest because he was too old to be a good thief any more is arrested for a burglary that he did not commit. Her father was sentenced to prison and soon died, leaving young Nancy and her two younger sisters alone in a big, bad world. Her neighbor is an old, philosophical watch maker named Jonathan Twist, who visits and offers to help them avoid living in the streets by offering to let them live with him. Nancy gets a job demonstrating a new cocoa in a drug store and is swept off her feet by wealthy Englishman Lord Cleveland. Unfortunately, soon after the wedding Lord Cleveland dies, leaving her only an expensive large home. Nancy reaches back to her scrappy youth and becomes an elusive bank robber and jewel thief. Her old neighbor Jonathan Twist becomes her fence for the jewelry and Nancy, Twist, and the two younger sisters are living in grand style. Talking to him as he examines an expensive necklace that she lifted at her last party she exclaims, 'I guess I just wasn't meant to be honest.' Police Captain Jim Garside, played by Joe King, is hot on her trail and it looks like he will soon discover that Nancy is indeed the master criminal 'The Bird.' Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter on it and enjoy the show.
