Strange are the Paths Man Treads to Happiness

"My whole career has been devoted to keeping people from knowing me," Leonidas Frank 'Lon' Chaney once said. The man of a thousand faces, Lon Chaney, was a very private movie star. Although he began acting in the first days of motion pictures, his real fame didn't begin until his landmark performance in The Hunchback of Notre Dame, filmed a year after this story. He was a loving family man with a sharp sense of humor who could dance with the best of them, but tried with all his might to keep his 'real' life separate from his movie life. He once said that Lon Chaney didn't exist once he left the movie lot, and often retreated with his family to his secluded cabin in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. When MGM wanted to make a film short featuring all of its current stars, there is one man with his back turned to the camera who is never identified . . . Lon Chaney. Of course, once his fame as a horror actor was established, his desire for off-screen privacy led to rumors that he was indeed a strange character, which only fanned the flames of his fame. A heavy cigarette smoker, Mr. Chaney died in 1930, ending a legendary film career far too soon, although his son, known as Lon Chaney Jr., created and established himself as a horror character actor in his own right. In this story Lon Chaney is lawyer David Webster, framed and sent to prison because of the treachery of another lawyer, and as the story begins he is escaping prison with the help of friends in Chinatown. He is determined to avenge his false imprisonment by finding and forcing a confession from Fletcher Burton, the lawyer who framed him so many years ago. Before searching for Burton he wants to visit his dear wife, but as he approaches the apartment where she is living he watches as her cold, dead body is put into a wagon and taken away. He watches the grief on his now grown daughter, who thinks that her father is dead, and his resolve to punish Burton is increased yet more. This leads to that and he finds his daughter, but doesn't tell her that he is her father. He soon discovers that she is in love with a young man who turns out to be the son of the man he is hunting down, and we are about to enter a part of the story that will lead to a very different ending . . . one that would never be seen today . . . an ending that at first puzzled me . . . heck, it still puzzles me . . . but wham, bang, there it is. I must ponder a bit on this ending, because I am sure there is a lesson to be learned . . . I think that maybe the story is so far ahead of its time that today, almost a hundred years later, it is still ahead of its time. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
