Excitement, Adventure and Romance
William Powell, best known for his 'Thin Man' detective movies with Myrna Loy and star of my favorite movie of all time, My Man Godfrey, had a very successful run in silent pictures before his star years in the talkies. In this silent comedy he teams with future movie star Richard Arlen and silent beauty Bebe Daniels. William Powell is gangster Mr. Todd, and since Prohibition is in full bloom and all alcohol is illegal in the U.S. Powell runs his rum smuggling business from an island outside the reach of the law. This island is also the home of the Manning Sanitarium, and cute Miss Barbara Manning, who thinks that she has a very weak heart and is attended to by doctors every moment of her life decides to go to the sanitarium for a rest. When William Powell discovers that she is the heir to thirty million dollars his rum smuggling doesn't seem to important and his goes after the real money . . . . Barbara. The laughs mount up as she gets her first snoot-full of liquor and becomes an uninhibited drunk, but soon the crime drama takes over as a rival gang attacks the island and tries to steal all of the smuggled rum. Little weak-hearted Barbara becomes a one-man army fending off all of the gangsters and discovers that her heart isn't as fragile as she always imagined. Her Uncle from Texas told her in the beginning, all she needed to be cured was a little excitement, adventure and romance, and now she has it all, thanks to the gangsters running her sanitarium. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter on it and enjoy the show.
