The Gangsters, The Cops, and the Girl in the Middle

In the early 1900’s, men in Boston began wearing their hair in a unique style that became known as the Boston haircut. With no part in their hair, it was combed straight back, ending in a square cut at the neckline.

In 1914, San Quentin Prison inmate Number 6066 wrote a series of short stories about a safe-cracking jewel thief that he called Boston Blackie. These stories became very popular, and Chester Morris, the bad guy in this gangster adventure, is best remembered as Boston Blackie in fourteen Boston Blackie movies and an NBC radio series.

While Chester Morris is remembered as Boston Blackie, he was never nominated for an Academy Award for any of his performances as the famous jewel-thief. He was, however, nominated for the Best Actor award at the second Academy Awards presentations in 1930, for his performance in this movie. This was his first ‘talking’ motion picture, and arguably his best. It was also the first talkie for actor Regis Toomey.

As our adventure opens, Chic Williams is getting out of prison. His girlfriend is the daughter of a police sergeant, and she believes that the cops framed her boyfriend. She believes that cops like her father frame innocent men just to get a conviction. In the battle of cops and gangsters, she is not quite sure which side is the more honorable. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
