The New Year's Surprise

Twenty-Eight year old Ann Harding is middle-aged wife Vera Kessler in her second movie appearance, and although acting in sound motion pictures was in its infancy, it is easy to see why she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress only two years later. In this pre-code drama she has spent a vacation in Italy away from her husband . . . with a Romanian gigolo who specializes in wooing wealthy women and then blackmailing them for all they are worth. Now she is back home and regretting her misadventure in Italy, but the gigolo has her incriminating letters . . . . Letters that he will give to her husband unless she pays him twenty thousand dollars. On the night that she goes to the blackmailer's apartment to pay him off there is a struggle . . . a gun goes off . . . The scoundrel blackmailer drops to the floor and the beautiful blackmailed wife rushes home. Her mind is drenched with the guilt of the murder, and without telling her husband why, she leaves him in disgrace. When she discovers that the dead man's servant is being charged with the murder she is totally distraught and goes to her husband's friend who is a lawyer and insists that he defend the servant . . . Did I mention that Vera's husband is the Honorable Judge? . . . The trial is quick and it looks like the servant will be convicted of the killing, but then evidence of a woman visiting the gigolo is presented . . . . A beautiful society woman was seen entering the apartment just before the murder . . . an unknown woman . . . . As a result the servant is not convicted, and the police go on the search for the mysterious woman visitor. Several months have passed and it is New Year's Eve. Vera's friend comes to her humble apartment and insists that Vera spend New Year's Eve with her and her husband at a gay New Year's Eve party. While Vera is getting ready, her friend's husband complains to her friend that he is not comfortable with the devious plan that she has created for Vera this evening . . . . I see storm clouds ahead . . . As Vera and her friend get to their party area at the nightclub we see an ominous cast of characters nearby who will create the nail-biting drama that is ahead . . . . The accused killer Ludwig Grimm will be their waiter, and behind the curtain her estranged husband is peering . . . and the violin player has eyes only for Vera . . . The stroke of midnight is quickly approaching. . . . Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
