The Mistress, Her Men and Her Baby

When I was 9 years old John F. Kennedy was elected President of the United States and the world met a man who will live on in the history of this world as long as there is a world. When I started finding and sharing old movies with you I never imagined that I would find a movie produced by President John F. Kennedy’s father . . . But here it is!

The Trespasser is the first talking picture from silent screen star Gloria Swanson . . . You may remember the other talking movie she is famous for, the 1950 drama “Sunset Blvd.” with co-star William Holden. While her acting talent is probably better in the 1950 movie, this story is far superior. . . And I say that knowing and agreeing with the folk who think her 1950 movie is one of the best dramas ever made.

This pre-code story is one of the reasons my father wouldn’t let us go to the movies. Gloria Swanson is a mistress . . . a ‘kept’ woman . . . with a child! In 1929 America things like this weren’t even whispered about . . . OK, they were whispered about, but this movie lays it all out plain and clear. . . The men . . . . Their wives. . . . And the mistress with her baby boy.

There were two actors in the first decades of motion pictures with the name “William Holden” – and both of Gloria Swanson’s famous talking movies featured them. In this story, an older William Holden is the wealthy father of the boy that Gloria Swanson’s character runs off to marry. The twists and turns around wealthy men and sexy women have rarely been shown on the big screen any better than in this romantic weeper.

Because my father taught me well about the evils of gossip I must not tell you about the 1929 gossip putting the producer of this movie in the bedroom of Gloria Swanson when the cameras were not rolling. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
