The First Best Actress Academy Award

On May 16, 1929 in a private banquet room at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel 270 actors and movie production professionals paid five dollars for a ticket that included dinner and a fifteen minute award ceremony where Louis B. Mayer presented the first Academy Awards. The winner for Best Actress was Janet Gaynor, and later that year she starred in this movie that premiered on Christmas Day 1929, as the Great Depression was sucking the life out of the country and soon the whole world. But the first Academy Award for Janet Gaynor is not the only 'first' associated with this captivating story . . . Sunnyside Up is the first . . . the very first motion picture with sound that incorporated singing and dancing into the story . . . the first film musical ever produced. Janet Gaynor and Charles Farrell acted together in many silent films, and their chemistry with each other is obvious, but this is the first 'talkie' for each of them. This is not only their first sound motion picture, it is the first time either of them sang on the big screen. In the mid-1930's when motion pictures began to be censored, the word 'Hell' was replaced with 'Blazes' but in the Sunnyside Up number, life can be swell, or life can be Hell, just as the composer wrote it. Another pre-code cute scene is when Jackie Cooper, in one of his first screen appearances, holds himself as he tries to sing a song at the Fourth of July block party, finally running offstage to go to the bathroom. There is also a rumor that Shirley Temple made her first screen appearance in the block party crowd scenes - you will spot her clearly if you watch closely. Although there are a few songs and one musical extravaganza in the story, the music doesn't overpower the story, and between the few musical numbers is a love story that does what Mary Pickford claims makes up the perfect story . . . It will make you laugh . . . Then it will make you cry . . . Then it will make you laugh again. Pop a really big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
