The Crazy Bachelor Party

I am continually amazed at how much comedy and plot development the early pioneers of film could stuff into a twenty minute story. Today I watch half hour comedies comprised of a two minute gag stretched to twenty minutes of story, but back in the early days of motion pictures it was the opposite. In this comedy a wealthy man wakes up with an historic hangover after his bachelor party to discover that he has married one of the vamps at the party. He discovers a wild woman who he supposedly married the night before who swings a large kitchen knife like she's killed before. He only escapes her wrath by being arrested by a local cop who got hit on the head from falling debris during their rousing fight. His fiancé, along with her mother and father, who happens to be the local judge, provide the punch line to the story . . . . But that isn't nearly enough for this twenty minute laugh-fest . . . young Harry Doolittle, played by silent comedian Harry Langdon not only faces the rage of the lady he married in a drunken binge, but his would-be mother-in-law and father-in-law. His future father-in-law is the local judge and he sends the young man to jail where he encounters an insane convict with strange sightings . . . a crap shooting group of inmates who he gives bad advice to and must flee from . . . a prison escape . . . hiding from the law as a hansom cabman . . . escaping the police when they discover his identity . . . two pot smoking passengers in his cab who make him deliriously high and sends him on a drug-induced trip on top of several cars . . . and it all ends quite well, by the way . . . Oh, and did I mention the butler . . . Would you believe that the butler did it? . . . Honest, the butler did it . . . . Whew . . . I'm tired just trying to give you a short description of this gigantic twenty minute adventure . . . and don't forget the lady that he supposedly married in a drunken stupor at his bachelor party . . . pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with warm melted butter on it and enjoy the show.
