Catching the Right Man

Cecil B. DeMille made his first motion picture in 1914 and very soon his genius was recognized and rewarded. He may be best remembered for his two movies about the Ten Commandments, and both the 1923 version and the 1959 version were blockbuster hits. You may not think of him when you think of great comedy, but this comedy about romance shows us his funny-bone. It was directed by Alan Hale, whose son was a great comedy character actor best remembered by television fans as the Skipper on Gilligan's Island. This love story starts out with beautiful Cecily and her scheming mother . . . Mother is almost broke, and the bills are piling up, so she has arranged with wealthy Coults-Browne to have her daughter marry him, and he will take care of all of Mama's debts. Of course, Cecily has different ideas . . . she is madly in love with a small-town country doctor, and the contest is on . . . Can Mama and Coults-Browne convince Cecily to marry Coults-Browne, or will she continue to chase the country doctor until he catches her? Mama dreams up the perfect plan and it looks like Mama will have her way. Mama suggests to the doctor that he invite Cecily and her to his country home for a visit . . . and Mama thinks that once Cecily sees the rough country lifestyle of Doctor Ted, who lives with his sister, her husband, a couple of mischievous rug-rats . . . and Hefty Helga the Swedish housekeeper, Cecily will come running back to the city and the 'good life' with wealthy Coults-Browne. Sure enough, after a few days in the country with the mad-cap life that includes little screaming kids and the primitive, country lifestyle . . . pampered city girl Cecily decides that being married to a poor country doctor is not her cup of tea, and she goes back to wealthy Coults-Browne and his wild party friends. Ahhh . . . but the story does not end here . . . the plot suddenly turns serious with a hit-and-run accident and a dying young boy. Like the best movies of every age, we will love . . . . we will laugh . . . then we will cry . . . . the question is . . . will we end with laughter or tears? Don't Count Your Chickens Before They're Hatched . . . or Your Sons-in-Law Before They're Matched . . . It's Risky Business! Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
