Can You ‘Twiddle’ Your Thumbs?

I haven't twiddled my thumbs since I was a little kid, and when a couple of actors in this romantic Broadway beach musical twiddled their thumbs I smiled to myself and immediately became a seven-year-old boy again, sitting under the apple tree in the back yard of 304 South Main Street in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania thinking about nothing and twiddling my thumbs. I was very proud that I could twiddle adroitly in both directions . . . what a feat!

This pre-code story concerns a wealthy family spending their summer at the Palm Beach Breakers Beach Club. Since it is pre-code, husbands will be chasing other women, and wives will be chasing other men, and there will be plenty of skin, no stockings on these girls, just long, bare, tanned legs.

The action surrounds the Reynolds family. Father is being seduced by a young attractive con-woman. Mother is chasing a young man on the beach. Daughter Peggy, played by June Clyde, is in love with Arthur Lake, who would become famous in the Blondie and Dagwood movies. Daughter Janet, played by Sally Blane, is in love with a con-man who has love letters from her that he will blackmail the family with.

Just another typical summer on the beach at the exclusive Breakers Beach Club in Palm Beach. It's all fun and games for the boys and girls on the beach until the gunfire starts. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
