Sybil, the Body Snatchers, and Snookie

When I was a youngster in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s, I remember a neighbor who built a bomb shelter in his basement stocked with food and water in case an atomic bomb was dropped on the town. I remember seeing 55-gallon drums of water stacked two high in the basement of my school, each emblazoned with three triangles in a circle with the words ‘Fallout Shelter’ and under that the words ‘Potable water.’

All of this was the result of the atomic bombs dropped in during the Second World War. Before going to Hollywood in 1910 or 1911, actor Eugene Pallette was a streetcar conductor in Portland, Oregon. By the mid-1930’s, as his wealth increased, he began purchasing wilderness land in Wallowa County, a long day’s drive from Portland, located in the top right corner of Oregon.

Until the Second World War it was just his wilderness refuge from society, but after World War Two he seems to have been convinced that atomic bombs would soon be falling on America.

He tried to keep his wilderness hideaway secret, often denying its existence, but it seems that he tried to create a place where he and friends could live the rest of their lives. Claude Hall, his long-time friend, said that he stored enough supplies on his 3,000+ acres to survive any atomic attack. Rumors have it that he had a large herd of cattle and supplies enough to last a lifetime.

In this crazy murder mystery, Eugene Pallette is Police Detective Brubacher, searching for the killer of a stranger found slumped in the alley near 52nd street in New York City. In the same funeral home holding the body of the stranger from the alley, there is another body that is surrounded by much mystery. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
