Comedy Caper

In the 1930's while America laughed at Laurel and Hardy and Abbott and Costello, Britain was laughing at Will Hay . . . and Jack Hulbert. Jack Hulbert and his wife Cicely Courtneidge, the two leading comedians in this story had a very successful career on stage dancing, singing and slinging jokes at audiences across Britain, and a smaller success with motion pictures. In this comedy farce they combine slapstick humor, comedy singing and dancing as they save the beautiful young girl from marriage to the not-so-nice Archduke of a small country on the Switzerland border. The story opens with a long sight-gag scene on the snowy Swiss ski resort where Jack Hulbert, a very good skier and ice skater in real life, can't seem to stay on his feet as he stumbles and bumbles down the hill towards the lodge below, finally crashing with wife Cicely, knocking her into a free-fall that ends in a chair in the dining room of the lodge, just in time for tea. Between the slapstick humor we discover that a stunningly beautiful young lady is running away from a marriage to Archduke Karl, and when Jack sees her checking in at the Swiss mountain resort he falls instantly in love. Although she can speak English quite well, she speaks German to Jack, and he makes a fool of himself trying to communicate his love for her. Meanwhile, Archduke Karl arrives with his bodyguards and before Jack and Sondra can get anything going she runs away from the lodge and the evil Archduke who is chasing her to force her into a marriage that she does not want. That's all the plot you need to know . . . there is much more, but you need only to sit back and roll with the Vaudeville style physical comedy, singing comedy and slapstick humor, and let the story peek through the laughter from time to time. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
