Make Love Like Romeo, Drink Like a Fish

In 1968 I was seventeen years old and driving a green 1961 Plymouth Pioneer that my dad bought from a neighbor for $75. It had a 24 gallon gas tank, and every Friday I would drive it to the gas station in Shanksville to fill it up. . . . . Well, it wasn’t really a gas station . . . . It was one gas pump in front of a house. The old fellow that owned the house would sit in his front room with a big picture window and watch the world go by. When someone like me pulled up to the gasoline pump in front of his house he would come outside and fill the tank with gas. For me it was a regular thing every Friday afternoon . . . . Fill the tank with gas and add a quart of oil, because it burned oil like an old train locomotive. It all came to less than $5 in those wonderful days . . . . sigh.

This story goes back 35 years earlier than those days and stars a very young John Wayne and big-screen beauty Evalyn Knapp. Early in the adventure John Wayne falls for a young beautiful girl in a small rural village and trades his expensive convertible car for the town gasoline station so that he can be near the country girl he has fallen for.

Some guys only like the girls who fall all over them, and some guys like the girl who has absolutely no interest in them. John Wayne is Dick Wallace, playboy son of a millionaire businessman, and the handsome young man has gold diggers throwing themselves at him, but he falls in love with the young granddaughter of a small town minister. She wants nothing to do with him so he takes over the village gasoline station in hopes of winning the heart of the girl that he is determined to marry. This leads to that and the young couple does get married, but when they get back to the big city, his millionaire father refuses to even meet the young lady that his playboy son has chosen to be his wife. What is a young girl to do when her father-in-law won’t even be introduced to her? She will become His Private Secretary, and win his heart just like she won the heart of his son. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
