13 Wampas Baby Stars of 1934
The Western Association of Motion Picture Advertisers, or WAMPAS, sponsored an annual showcase of the thirteen most promising new female movie stars for Hollywood producers to meet and hopefully launch their careers in motion pictures. Started in 1922, the event took place every year until 1934, the year that this motion picture was created. The event was titled the "WAMPAS Frolic", and several of the WAMPAS Baby Star girls went on to become major stars. The 1922 Wampas Baby Stars included Mary Philbin and Claire Windsor. In 1923 Evalyn Brent was one of the new actresses that was selected as a Wampas Baby Star, and the 1924 girls included legendary silent screen actress Clara Bow. Mary Astor was one of the 1926 Baby Stars along with Joyce Compton and Marceline Day, Janet Gaynor and Fay Wray. The 1929 stars included Jean Arthur and Sally Blane, and in 1931 Joan Blondell and Marian Marsh were part of the selected few, and in 1932 Evalyn Knapp and a gal named Ginger Rogers were two of the thirteen most promising new actresses. This movie showcases the final thirteen starlets of the Wampas era, and it is a fascinating peek at Behind-the-Scenes Hollywood and the making of motion picture stars. In the story that was created around that year's WAMPAS Frolic we meet a Hollywood publicity man Bob Preston, played by actor William Haines, and his is determined to promote the career of one of the lucky 13 starlets called June Dale, played by Judith Allen. Judith Allen was not one of that year's baby stars, but the rest of the girls are the actual WAMPAS Baby Stars of 1934. They all get their close-up shots and script lines to show the world their acting ability and their screen beauty, and all are called by their real names. The other 'real' person in the movie is Ted Fio Rito, a famous radio band leader of the time. One of his female singers, Betty Grable, would go on to become the most famous pin-up girl for World War II soldiers to take with them in the bunkers of war. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy a time-machine visit to 1934 Hollywood and the thirteen young, beautiful and most promising female starlets.
