The Gold Mine and the Golden Haired Lady

Every once in a while, I get a note from Father John, who is at one of America’s most beautiful Catholic Basilicas. Once when we were chatting via e-mail, Father John mentioned that his favorite cowboy movies were the early stories that included the pounding hooves of the horses and the loud crack of a gun, but no music. The earliest motion pictures did not add orchestra music to the background, and the early cowboy stories didn’t have singing cowboys, and the difference is quite amazing.

After Father John’s comment I’ve been watching the cowboy movies differently, and I think that I agree with him. The cowboy movies like this one, without any background music, seem to be more real, . . . Almost like a reality television show.

In this adventure young John Wayne is headed up to the Western Canadian wilderness in search of a man and his daughter. Along with Noah Beery Jr. he will discover that the man he is looking for has died, and left a map with directions to a fabulously wealthy gold mine. The daughter is missing, and John Wayne will search for her, if the French Canadian outlaws don’t get him first . . . Or the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, who are chasing John Wayne and Noah Beery Jr. over a little murder during a card game on the way to Canada. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show . . . Minus any music at all.
