Taking Candy from a Stranger

"Never take candy from a stranger," my mom would tell me when I was a youngster . . . but why? Candy is dandy and who cares where it comes from? After watching this children's adventure from 1935 I finally discovered why candy from strangers can be a very bad thing. Young Emil Blake, living with his mother in a small town outside London is going on a train trip into London to visit his grandmother and young cousin Polly. Mother gives him a large sum of money, with strict orders to spend only so much on his trip and give the bulk of the money to Grandmother. On the train Emil meets the man in the bowler hat . . . the man with the wicked grin and the tall tales offers young Emil a sweet from his bag of candy . . . and what young lad could refuse a piece of candy on a long train trip? Soon Emil falls into a psychedelic stupor and when he wakes up the strange man wearing a bowler hat is gone . . . and so is his money! Emil spots the man leaving the train and instead of going to greet his Grandmother he starts following the man in the bowler hat. Emil, played by John Williams, soon meets Gussy, played by Donald Pittman, and Gussy promises to help Emil follow the man and get Emil's money back. Gussy gets the rest of his street gang and together the kids follow the thief and try to get the money back. Danger and adventure are ahead for the kids, but never fear, because the talents of one big-bad thief are no match for the spunk, cunning and determination of our gang of London children. This movie is a re-make of a German film released four years earlier, and may be seen with English subtitles here: Emil und die Detektive >>. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm, melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
