The Royal Road to Riches

If you have watched a lot of British police detective stories, even American police detective stories, you probably expect the police to come off as a bit foolish and several steps behind the detective or leading character that solves the crimes that baffle the police. This Scotland Yard mystery is possibly the exception that proves the rule. The New Scotland Yard is baffled by a crime wave in London led by a mysterious Mr. Maddick . . . A mysterious chess player that even his own henchmen have never laid eyes on. Now, instead of the police bumbling along behind an amateur citizen detective, the Yard uses cunning methods to plant one of their own men undercover inside the gang. All is going splendidly for the coppers . . . except that their inside man, Pete Borden, played by Esmond Knight, like every other member of the gang, never, ever gets to lay his eyes on the big man . . . Maddick could be anyone . . . anyone at all. The only clue that they have is a note found clutched in the hand of a dead Policeman on Maddick's trail that reads: born 1935 ad . . . Now remember, when we are watching this story in the movie theaters it is 1935 . . . hmmm . . . . On another topic, there is a gorgeous girl in the crime ring, Natasha, played by Lilli Palmer. This is Ms. Palmer's first feature film, and it is easy to predict that she will go on to movie star status very quickly. Lilli Palmer had a notable career both in Britain and then in Hollywood, and was for many years married to Rex Harrison . . . Until the tragic scandal when actress Carole Landis committed suicide after an evening tryst with Rex Harrison. Lilli Palmer stood by her man throughout the scandal period, but then divorced him later. Anyway . . . Back to our mystery . . . As I've said, The New Scotland Yard seems to be two steps ahead of the elusive Mr. Maddick until . . . Maddick, whoever he is, gets suspicious that there is someone inside his organization that is tipping off the coppers. Maddick is a genius, and it doesn't take him long to find out that Borden is the snitch, and he plans to kill Borden and Natasha together while the New Scotland Yard is clueless . . . . It will take some good old fashioned 'dumb luck' . . . or maybe a bit of help from Natasha . . . to make this story end well . . . Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
