Whistling in the Dressing Room

In Britain theatre there is a superstition that if one whistles in the dressing room . . . the actress closest to the door will be fired . . . unless . . . the girl who whistled goes immediately into the hallway and turns a circle three times. When chorus girl Leslie, played by Margaret Lockwood, whistles a tune in the dressing room after a performance the other chorus girls insist that she go immediately into the hallway and turn 'round three times. Unfortunately she is undressed, wearing only her under slip . . . but into the hallway she must go and turn 'round . . . and in the hallway outside the chorus girl's dressing room door is the Earl of Pangborouugh, just returned from the jungles and he hasn't seen a pretty girl for many years. He is immediately taken with the brunette girl, but there are two blondes after him, and these two street-wise gold diggers know all the angles, so Leslie doesn't have a chance at getting close to the Earl. The two blondes that are after the Earl are Gloria, played by Renee Houston, and Clytie, played by Lilli Palmer, and these two girls really know how to fight dirty and get their man. It would seem that the Earl is destined to lose a lot of money to one of the two blonde gold-diggers and brunette Leslie will be forgotten on the sidelines of the game of love . . . or will she? . . . Sometimes the harder a girl tries to throw herself at a man the more the man resists . . . and the girl who sits quietly by is the one that he really wants. After much ado about chasing the Earl, it looks like shy brunette Leslie James will be the winner in the race to capture the heart of the Earl . . . Unless the Earl's Aunt Primrose, played by Helen Haye, can uncover the secret lie that brunette Leslie James is living . . . and she will! Oh, my goodness . . . Now what will happen to the Earl that is chased by all the chorus girls . . . and what will happen to the brunette who loves him but is living a lie . . . Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
