Pheasant Inn under Glass

Only the British can successfully blend so much subtle humor with a detective murder story to create a deliciously entertaining crime adventure. The character of Inspector Hornleigh was created by Hans Priwin for a 1930's radio program, and was used in three motion pictures, and this is the first one that was brought to the big screens of England. In this first episode of the trilogy a man who recently moved into a rented room is found stabbed to death in his room. When Inspector Hornleigh investigates he discovers the briefcase of the Chancellor of England's that is empty - where are the secret budget papers for the nation? Has someone taken a peek at the financial plans of the country? Will a nefarious businessman extort fortunes from the information in those papers? Inspector Hornleigh and he well-meaning assistant who sometimes seems to be a sandwich short of a picnic have a day and a half to discover who killed the man in the boarding house room and how is this man connected to the theft of the National budget papers. The dead man turns out to be a porter for the Pheasant Inn, owned by Ann Gordon and her brother. The Chancellor and his assistant Peter Dench were at the Pheasant Inn the night of the murder, and it seems that the Chancellor's briefcase was switched for a duplicate during their visit to the pub at the Inn. There are suspects galore, all connected to the Pheasant Inn, including Bill Gordon, brother of the Inn's owner, and Wittens, the Inn's manager . . . and the assistant to the Chancellor, Peter Dench, seems to be involved somehow. Soon there is another murder . . . and then another . . . as Inspector Hornleigh and his assistant Sergeant Bingham, played by Alastair Sim, follow the clues that seem to lead to more suspects instead of one killer. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
