Chelsea Bridge . . . and . . .

In the second of three movies about Inspector Hornleigh he and his quirky assistant Bingham, played by Alastair Sim, are on their final day of holiday at the sunny beach . . . but instead of sun and fun they are inside the resort with the rest of the guests while strong winds and rain buffet the area. The only man outside enjoying the stormy weather is a man who claims to be a retired seaman who loves the splash of rain in his face and the wind howling through the air . . . But as he interrupts Hornleigh and Bingham as they are starting a game of snooker, and inadvertently shows his ignorance of the sea . . . Captain Fraser is a fraud who doesn't know port from stern. No matter though, because soon the Captain is dead as his car tumbles over a high cliff and crashes to the beach below, burning his body beyond recognition. Ahhhh . . . but the sea captain who isn't a sea captain isn't the first peculiar death, as Hornleigh and Bingham discover as they return to London to investigate the dead man's life and death. In fact Bingham follows a young lady that was present at the reading of the man's will, and discovers the dead man with his dog entering the same house she enters, so he does what any good cop in 1939 would do . . . he jimmy's the lock for the downstairs entrance and quietly searches the house . . . where he discovers the supposedly dead man sitting in a chair . . . dying from a blunt bash in the head! As the dying man sees Bingham he rises and tries to tell him something, but before dying can only whisper, "Chelsea Bridge . . . and . . . " Thus begins a comedy crime adventure that will lead Bingham to his death bed at St. Ann's Hospital in London as bait to catch someone in the hospital who is snatching dead bodies that will be used to fake the death of heavily insured people. After this adventure Gordon Harker and Alastair Sim made one final episode about Inspector Hornleigh and Sergeant Bingham that you can watch here: Inspector Hornleigh Goes To It - 1941 . . . But first pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy this show.
