Honeymoon in Havana

The recently discovered print of this movie is very worn and very rough . . . . There is a loud buzz accompanying the voices and proper lighting for out-of-studio movie scenes was still a primitive skill . . . The story isn't award winning material either, but we get a glimpse of two actors you should know about. Our story takes place on an island in the Caribbean where famous pirate Henry Morgan is living in the small town at Hell Harbor. Jean Hersholt is the island rich guy who wants to buy Henry Morgan's beautiful daughter Anita. Hersholt was born in Denmark and by the end of his movie career he was known as the Great Dane of the movies. In the early silent era he was usually cast as the bad guy, and in this early talkie, he is not the leading man. His kindness and generosity to all in real life became his trademark, and the personality of the Great Dane came through best in the six movies he became most famous for. In 1937 he starred in a hit radio program that blossomed into six movies between 1939 and 1941 about a kind and wise country doctor, Dr. Christian. Hersholt would later generously help fund a retirement home for Hollywood actors who couldn't afford to live on their own. He also served as President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. It is a shame that Hersholt couldn't have more influence on Lupe Velez, the star of this story. She was born María Guadalupe Villalobos Vélez, the daughter of a Mexican Colonel and brought up in a wealthy home. When she was 13 years old she was sent to the convent of Our Lady of the Lake in San Antonio, Texas to learn English and other school subjects. While in the convent the Mexican government changed hands and her wealthy Colonel was now an outcast and the family was in poverty. Lupe had developed into a beautiful young lady and her entry into show business and movies enabled her to help her family. Unfortunately she had such a fiery temper and personality, and she never met anyone who could 'tame' her or mellow her wild personality. After a failed marriage to Johnny Weissmuller, at the age of 36, with a bun in the oven from an actor she was dating, she was discovered dead from an overdose of Seconal. You can watch her at her best in this story when she was 22 years old, as Anita, the daughter of Pirate Henry Morgan. Her father wants to sell her to the wealthy man who had valuable pearls to sell the Americans, but she insists that the man is too ugly for her. When the American arrives in the tall ship she instantly falls in love with him, and will scheme to prevent the island man from selling his pearls to the American and using the money to buy her as a wife. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
