The Ultimate Secret of Life

As I started to watch this story I was thinking about how to explain this story in such a way that might tempt you into wanting to watch it, and I soon had too many ways to find a hook, and none of them jumped out at me. The basic outline of the story is that an immigrant to America with two little boys and a little girl becomes a citizen and starts a dye company. We move forward fifteen years and discover that he is very successful and living the classic American Dream. His two sons each have wives, and his daughter has a boyfriend. His sons' wives convince the boys to push Papa out of the company that he built so that the new younger generation could take over. Eventually the Papa that built a great business is living in the poor house with other old men who have no money or means. Now, I could talk about the witchy wives pushing their husbands into tossing Papa to the curb so that they could live a more modern and wild lifestyle . . . . I could talk about the two sons who could quickly forget about the Papa that gave them a wonderful life in America . . . I could talk about the Papa who would allow his kids to kick him to the curb without standing up to them . . . . I could discuss the balance that children must have when caring for their children, their spouses, and their parents, no easy answers there . . . Naw . . . . All of these thoughts pale to the one that kicked in as the story progressed . . . . This leads to that and very surprising thing happens . . . Papa learns the very ultimate secret of life itself . . . . Papa will discover this secret and it will change is world . . . This secret was revealed to me by one of the mentors that I follow, Derek Sivers, who created a masterful treatise on the meaning of life. In my humble opinion, the heart of it all is one line that proclaims that we need two things . . . . A goal (passion, talent, job, challenge), and not quite enough time. Not quite enough time? Yup, for the best life possible, to live fully for every moment we are alive, we need to have something to do . . . . Something that drives us to wake early and stay up late . . . Something that we never have quite enough time to finish . . . . Something that will keep us moving until the final breath . . . . That is what this story is about . . . . The secret of life, played out in grand fashion way back in 1933, and it is as true today as it was then. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
