Honest John and the Sandwich Board

Harry Holman is "Honest John," a con man who is wanted in Kansas for larceny when a carnival con went bad. A New York City publicity man calls him when he needs a fresh face to help him arrange some publicity for a Broadway theater on 47th street that has many more seats than customers. Russell Hopton plays the publicity man and thanks to a pile of money and Honest John, the theater becomes front page news and suddenly the seats are full of paying customers. Honest John gets even more famous than the theater because of the publicity stunt and a movie newsreel crew wants to film Honest John and the theater owner and spread his fame around the world. In the 1930's radio was still very new and not the place to go for breaking news. . . . . Newspapers were the source of most information, but a national story could take a week or more to show up in newspapers around the country . . . . So movie theaters were the place to see breaking news and information . . . . Every theater got fresh reels of film with new movies every few days, and along with the movies were reels of news . . . . Hot news . . . . Breaking news stories with graphic video. In addition to showing the big fires, explosions, earthquakes and other sensational stories, the newsreel crews would film 'public interest' stories like new fashion outfits, or lost dogs returned to their owner . . . . . Or the story of Honest John, the man who returned ten thousand dollars of lost money to the theater . . . . Of course, it was all a set-up, and in addition, when the cops in Kansas saw Honest John on the newsreel they would send for him to be arrested for his involvement in the Kansas Carnival racket . . . . By this time we are all fond of Honest John, and while he is certainly a two-bit con man, he is portrayed as a relatively harmless and lovable fellow . . . . The problem for the screenwriters for this story now is how to convert Honest John from a con man to an honest fellow . . . . . If only there were a bigger skunk in the story . . . . . Yeah, that might just do the trick. . . . . Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
