The Ranger and the Dummies

By the time he was 21 years old Vincent Markowski, champion weight lifter, had worked as a sailor, lumberjack and coal miner. In 1924 when he was 21 he discovered movie making in Los Angeles and because of his rugged good looks and great athletic abilities he became a silent screen movie actor using the name Bill Burns. He later worked under the name Tom Tyler, and when talkies came along he successfully hid his slight Lithuanian accent and became a cowboy leading man during the golden age of Westerns. In this cowboy adventure he is a Texas Ranger who captures outlaw Jimmy, played by Rex Lease. Tom refers to Rex Lease as a young boy, but Rex was actually the exact same age as Tom Tyler. Rex Lease grew up with the goal of becoming a preacher, but found Hollywood more interesting, and became a bit actor in silent films beginning in 1922. Handsome Rex Lease often found parts that landed him near the top of the billing, like in this story where he plays the number two actor, but he never really became a top box office draw. Despite working as a supporting cast member and rarely the star, he appeared in over 300 movies and television shows before retiring from films in 1960. In this adventure Tom Tyler is a Texas Ranger searching for Travis and his gang, who had just murdered a couple of Texas Rangers. He captures two of the outlaws and then goes after the third one that got away, and after a tussle with the third outlaw he decides to befriend the young fellow (Rex Lease) and try to convince him to join the good guys and help him infiltrate the Travis gang. The young fellow agrees, and leads Tom to the Mexican cantina where Travis has his gang hang out, and we also meet beautiful cantina singer and dancer Joan, played by Margaret Nearing. Margaret only appeared in 12 motion pictures, often as a dancer, and got the nickname 'Gams' for her beautiful and athletic legs. Before acting in motion pictures Margaret and her sister were circus performers. When Margaret was 7 and her sister was 9 they performed the first and only song and dance act on a tight wire high above the ground without any pole, umbrella or other balancing prop. A year before this movie Margaret sang on the first live coast-to-coast radio broadcast. This story was her final appearance in motion pictures, because she then married a wealthy descendent of the Royal Houses of Tahiti and Hawaii and she lived in Lanikai on the Island of O'ahu for the rest of her life . . . But right now our actors are part of the story about outlaws and the Rangers . . . and the Dummies . . . Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
