Bribing Life with an Apple

Our adventure opens in a small town one-room school and it is the final day of school before summer vacation. Charles Conrad, played by Roger Imhof, is the richest man in town and he will give the closing speech before all the kids leave for the summer. He tells the kids that the only thing that they can learn in school is how to teach themselves, and life will be their toughest school-master. He turns to look at the principle of the school who is at his desk with a shiny red apple on it that some student had brought for him. Conrad points to the apple and tells the kids that they will not be able to bribe life with an apple . . . . I wish that I had heard his comments when I was a youngster, they are pretty good . . . . It might have saved me a lot of grief over the years . . . . . Naw . . . . On second thought, I think that I'd still have made the same mistakes . . . . After all, wisdom is the result of experience, and experience is the fruit from the tree of mistakes . . . . And is my tree huge! . . . . Conrad's son Richard is busy growing a pretty large 'mistake' tree himself. When papa Conrad gets home he discovers that his son has been kicked out of another college, and is in the company of a blonde bimbo who he just married on a whim. Papa Conrad has plenty of wisdom himself . . . . His 'mistake tree' must be a big one also, because he wisely handles the blonde gal and soon she is on her way and out of his son's life for good . . . . maybe. Son Robert is the classic spoiled rich kid who enjoys spending the money and has a strong aversion to the working class – only stupid people work, you know. Ahhh, but wise Papa Conrad has a few tricks up his sleeve for Robert, and who knows . . . . Maybe something good can be made out of the spoiled brat once life without papa's money becomes Robert's teacher . . . . . If Robert can learn how to handle life on his own without any help from papa in his small home town he might even discover the love of a girl who doesn't care if he is rich or poor . . . . . Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
