I have always been at least 30 or 40 years behind . . . when someone tells me about a brand new blockbuster movie, I usually tell them that I can hardly wait until the movie is 50 years old so that I can watch it. My mom and dad were much older when I was born, and they were more like grandparents would be to me, and hearing their stories of 'the old days' gave me a love and respect for times gone by. My dad got me hooked on books that he read as a kid, like The Hardy Boys detective mysteries and Tom Swift books. So as a young boy, even though America was heading for the moon, my young imagination was living in the first days of flying and the wonders of man leaving the earth to wander in the wild blue yonder. When I watched this movie and saw little Dickie Jones helping the Sky Patrol find the rogue airplane I saw a little Jimmy Berkey, helping the big guys find the gangsters. I enjoyed seeing a very young Milburn Stone, who I remember as the old doctor on the Gunsmoke television series, but I almost couldn't recognize actor Jackie Coogan . . . he was a handsome young fellow . . . and he had a full head of hair!
In 1927 Charles Lindbergh flew nonstop across the Atlantic Ocean and the world's attention focused on airplanes like never before. In 1928 the Tailspin Tommy newspaper cartoon strip was created by Hal Forrest and soon became daily reading in over 250 newspapers across America. The Tailspin Tommy adventures also became a part of one of the first modern comic books. The cartoon strip continued until 1942, a couple of years after this movie. There were four motion pictures produced by Monogram Pictures about this fictional airplane hero, and this is the second in that series.
