After watching this 1933 police adventure I am more convinced than ever that the more things change, the more they stay the same. One of my very best friends is a retired Sheriff's Deputy who shared enough stories of his adventures with law enforcement that the two partners in this movie look very familiar to me. For several years Donald and I were partners in a side business, and our relationship was much like that of the two cops in this movie. I can easily imagine Donald as one of these two partners - of course he'd be the one that got the girl. These two cops bicker, fight and compete over everything – they even fight for the love of a gangster's moll. In one scene where both police partners are sharing a jail cell, one is working on a crossword puzzle and needs a four letter word that means 'trouble.' The partner answers quickly that the word must be 'g-i-r-l' - and he is so right. What guys will do for the love of a pretty girl is amazing. After they get out of jail they both swear to each other that they are cured of fighting over women . . . but there is no cure for that. If more women had a clue as to the phenomenal power that they hold over men this would be a far different world. Guys don't stand a chance against a girl who knows how to handle a man. But like good cops everywhere, when the poop hits the fan . . . there is no better friend than your partner. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn and enjoy a look at cops and gangsters and pretty girls from the big city in 1933 - and the same story could be told today, and probably a hundred years from now.
