Hopalong Cassidy Rides Solo

This is the fifth in a series of more than 60 Hopalong Cassidy movie adventures, and it is very different from the usual story format. In most of the Hopalong Cassidy adventures there is a pretty girl, and in this movie the eye-candy is Muriel Evans, as Linda McHenry. Like most of the Hoppy adventures the pretty young girl is never a love interest, the good guy never marries the girl at the end of the show. But there it ends . . . Usually Hopalong Cassidy has a young and handsome sidekick, played by Jimmy Ellison in the early adventures. Well. . . . James Ellison is Bar 20 cowhand Johnny Nelson in this story, but he is a drunken gambler who just might rob and shoot the owner of the Bar 20. Hopalong Cassidy adventures also featured a comedy relief character, usually George ‘Gabby’ Hayes, and although he is in this story as a prominent character, he is one of the bad guys, ‘Shanghai’ McHenry, who will take young Johnny Nelson out into the desert and force him to dig his own grave. Yes, Hoppy is alone in this adventure, and there is no telling what might happen next. When he returns to the Bar 20 ranch with the money from the sale of some cattle, he discovers that his buddy Johnny Nelson has robbed and shot the ranch owner and is on the run from the law. Willie Fung, as ranch cook Wong provides the comedy relief for this story, but Hoppy is on his own as he tracks down the fellows who shoot the ranch owner and rob him of all the money from the sale of cattle. His usual sidekick Johnny is the prime suspect and is on the run . . . His usual comic relief buddy Gabby Hayes is a nasty outlaw, and Hopalong Cassidy is on his most puzzling cowboy adventure ever . . . Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
