Heaven help the Sailors on a Night like This, or The Leap-Year Blues

Bill Gargan’s dad was a bookie who was tough enough to collect all the debts from the losing gamblers. As a teenager he did what he saw his father doing, working as a debt collector and private eye, until the time he was assigned to watch and protect a diamond salesman in New York City. He botched that job and was fired. His older brother Ed was acting on Broadway, so William began his acting career in small parts of Broadway plays.

Between acting gigs, while alcohol was still illegal in the U.S., Bill would sell bootleg booze to the New York City Speakeasies, skillfully evading the police. During his Hollywood movie career, he usually played a private eye or police detective, possibly drawing on his experiences as a young man in New York.

In this adventure he is NOT a policeman or private eye, but rather a career Navy flyer. Our time period is the middle of the Great Depression, a few years before our entry into World War Two would pull us out of economic depression and create the beginning of the Post-World War Two baby boom.

As our adventure opens, his best friend, also a Navy pilot, learns that he has just become a father, and the Navy boys are anxious to help him bring up his son in the best Navy way. Unfortunately, the mother dies, and then a few days later, the new Navy father also dies.

When the baby boy’s aunt and grandmother come to take charge of the baby, there is only one thing that the Navy boys can do. Bill Gargen, as Navy Pilot Lieutenant ‘Red’ Furness, and his buddies secretly steal the baby so that they can raise the young boy the proper Navy way. How hard could it be for three Navy pilots to keep a baby boy hidden from his aunt and the Navy? Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
