It Was a Dark and Stormy Night . . .

The large bed and breakfast seems to be haunted . . . along with the obligatory pipe organ music eerily playing in the middle of the night there is a black hooded 'monk' walking the grounds outside, and bright lightning piercing the night followed by the deep rumble of thunder. Hawkins the butler asks if he should lock up for the night, but then closes the large windows and makes certain that one window is left unlocked . . . The strange drunk man trying to stay at the house isn't quite as drunk as he appears . . . The owner's daughter comes to visit but papa makes it known the she is not welcome, and refuses to tell her why . . . The strange woman and daughter staying at the home who believes that ghosts haunt the mansion . . . and finally the dead body on the floor. It all revolves around a gold theft ten years earlier . . . masterminded by a man who doesn't seem to exist because no one can describe his appearance - madman Mike O'Shea. Talk about your riveting mystery . . . this masterfully written tale will keep you scratching your head to the very end. It begins with a gold robbery masterminded by a man who is never seen by his two henchmen or anyone else. After the robbery the two henchmen are ratted out to the police by the unknown mastermind of the robbery and spend ten years in the pokey. Now it is ten years later, and the two men are out of jail and both vow to find the elusive master criminal and the gold that he cheated them out of. And everything revolves around this haunted house that was purchased ten years earlier . . . just after the robbery. Oops, wait a second, the night after the strange murder two more men suddenly vanish . . . sheesh, I still cannot tell who is a good guy and who is a bad guy . . . maybe there really is a haunting by a long-dead, organ playing monk . . . or maybe the elusive Mike O'Shea, the mad criminal is roaming the hidden passageways of the mansion . . . Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter on it and enjoy this classic whodunit from one of the great British storytellers, Edgar Wallace.
