The Outlaw is the Hero?

Sunset Boulevard and Fuller Avenue meet Hollywood Boulevard just a bit west of Grauman’s Chinese Theater. At 1544 North Fuller Avenue, just up the street from that intersection is an apartment house. In the 1960’s, legendary character actor Douglass Dumbrille and his second wife lived there in a small two-bedroom apartment. They commonly left their apartment door open to catch the breeze, and could often be seen eating dinner in the small living room, willing to chat with anyone who wandered along and wanted to say ‘hi.’

Character actor Douglass Dumbrille, the star of this adventure, was born in 1889, and his good friend, character actor Alan Mowbray was seven years younger. Douglass Dumbrille’s wife passed in 1958, after a marriage that lasted almost fifty years.

Two years later, on May 19, 1960, seventy-year-old Douglass Dumbrille and twenty-eight-year-old Patricia Mowbray, the daughter of his good friend Alan Mowbray, were married in Las Vegas. The happy couple lived in that modest two-bedroom apartment until his death fourteen years later.

In this cowboy adventure Douglass Dumbrille is the hero, but as the adventure opens he and his side-kick, played by Sidney Toler, rob a stage coach. Yup, the hero of this story is the infamous outlaw Pecos Bill, feared throughout the land. His partner Frosty has done time in every jail south of Montana. It looks like this will not be our normal cowboy adventure. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
