Why is Everyone Lying?

Alfred Hitchcock was famous for bringing bizarre stories to the screen cloaked in so much 'normal' that not only the leading characters fail to see the danger and macabre goings on, but even you and I, watching from our comfortable and safe surroundings will wonder what is true and what is illusion. Our amazing adventure opens in a small mountain village in the Alps where assorted passengers are waiting to board a train and head to the coast and on to England. Everything and everyone are so 'normal' that we think we may be watching a romantic comedy . . . . Not realizing the danger and mystery that lie ahead. We meet a young girl on a last fling with her two girlfriends before returning to England to get married. Margaret Lockwood is Iris Matilda Henderson, a wealthy British girl who is about to marry a cash-poor man who has a crest and a grand British family history and reputation. We also meet a doughty old gal who tells us that she is a governess and music teacher returning to England after many years in this country in the Alps. Dame May Whitty is Miss Froy, the lady who will disappear without a trace on a train filled with very 'normal' passengers. In the morning as our characters are preparing to board the train, Miss Froy goes over next to the hotel to pick up her bag, and Margaret Lockwood goes over to help her. The camera pans up to an open window high above the two ladies and we watch a pair of hands slowly push a heavy potted flower off the edge of the window sill and it tumbles below and lands squarely on Margaret Lockwood's head. . . The young English girl who is scheduled to be married in a week will later have a nap on the train, and when she awakes the old gal is gone . . . . And no one on the train can remember her at all . . . The old governess and music teacher has vanished . . . Or maybe she never existed . . . . Michael Redgrave, as music historian Gilbert, will finally believe Margaret Lockwood and together they will search for the old gal . . . . And everything still seems so normal . . . . . Maybe too normal . . . . Who would believe that the safety and future of the British Empire rests on their ability to find and aid the old gal who has disappeared from the face of the earth? . . . . But find her they must . . . If they can survive long enough . . . . Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
