The Beautiful Young Red Head and the Insane Squire

Maureen O’Hara, in her first starring role, is a nineteen-year-old orphan. When her mother died, Mary Yellen set off for the Cornish Coast, to find her aunt and uncle, who are landlords of the public house called Jamaica Inn. Young Mary believes that her aunt and uncle will welcome her with open arms and take care of her.

Unfortunately, Mary does not know that the Jamaica Inn is the headquarters for a band of outlaws. A group of tough thieves, smugglers and cut-throats that plunder passing ships, is led by her uncle Joss, at the Jamaica Inn. The Jamaica Inn is so notorious as a den of thieves that the passing coach refuses to stop when young Mary insists that she wants to get off there. The coach speeds up and rushes past the rogue inn, stopping a mile down the road to let the young girl walk back to the inn.

Fortunately for Mary, on the way to the Jamaica Inn she stops at a large mansion by the road, and meets Sir Humphrey Pengallan, played by the legendary Charles Laughton. The Squire of the land promises to escort her personally to the Jamaica Inn to meet her aunt and uncle, and promises to help her in any way that he can. Usually, it is an amazing blessing to be known by and protected by the Squire of the land.

Unfortunately, Squire Pengallan is a bit odd, as were all of his ancestors. Yes, he is a bit odd, and one might say completely insane. Young Mary is now surrounded by the cut-throat thieves of Jamaica Inn, and an insane Squire with less on his mind than we will ever know. Can there be any salvation for the beautiful young lady who has thrust herself into the wild and lawless Cornish Coast and the infamous Jamaica Inn? Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
