Iron Poor Blood

When I was a young kid I saw plenty of television commercials for Geritol, touting it's ability to cure folk of Iron Poor Blood. I was about 14 years old and we lived in Meadville, Pennsylvania where dad was a preacher at a small church on Washington Street. He was feeling 'down' and went to the doctor for a checkup. He came home and told mom (with me listening in :~) that the only thing the doctor found was that his blood pressure was a bit low. Dad said that the doctor suggested that he take a shot of whiskey every evening, but dad was a country preacher that preached against all forms of alcohol, so that was out. Instead he bought some Geritol, which was actually whiskey laced with vitamins and iron. In his eyes, if the label said 'Black Velvet' it was a sin to drink, but if the label said 'Geritol' it was all right, even though the alcohol levels were much the same. I remember climbing up on the kitchen counter so that I could reach the top shelf where he kept the Geritol and trying a swig . . . . . Yuck! . . . it was awful! In this Western adventure John Wayne is a Federal Agent searching for gangsters who are making counterfeit twenty dollar bills, and their only lead is a medicine show that was connected to the counterfeiters a few years ago. Doc Carter (Earle Hodgins) is selling his cure-all bottles of medicine that are labeled as 90% alcohol along with his lovely young daughter Linda, played by Marion Burns. Wayne joins the show as a sharp shooter, and along with entertainers Mike and Ike . . . no, not the candy that we ate at the movie theater . . . Mike and Ike are two performers in the show who sing and play for the audiences. There are plenty of the required fist fights, gun fights and swell horse riding to keep the excitement up, and we also get to experience a real medicine show, very much as they were presented in real life back in the day. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
