Hopalong Makes War on Women

Bill Boyd, as Hopalong Cassidy, was never meaner or tougher than in this Western adventure, and with good reason. The bad guy in this story is a lady . . . A gambling saloon owner with henchmen that will kill a man just for fun. Evelyn Brent is Crystal Slipper owner Lilli Marsh, and her henchmen run the town of Mesa Grande, robbing and killing without anyone who will stand up to them.

Evelyn Brent was born in Tampa Florida in 1899 and wanted to be a school teacher, but her beauty brought her offers to act in the new sensation of moving pictures. Her first apperance in a motion picture was in 1914, and during the silent era her sexy and sultry look on camera made her a favorite leading lady during the silent years. Evelyn kept acting after sound was added to motion pictures, and her final screen appearance was in a 1960 television episode of “Wagon Train.”

As our adventure opens a peg-leg prospector has discovered a rich vein of gold and Lilly has him killed so that she can file the claim and run the mine. Wheel-chair bound newspaper man Saunders publishes stories exposing the corruption of the Crystal Slipper gang, but he is soon killed by Blackie, a tough henchman played by Morris Ankrum. Before the newspaper editor was killed he sent for help . . . He called his old friend Hopalong Cassidy to come to Mesa Grande and help to clean up the town. Hopalong arrives with his kid brother Buddy Cassidy just in time to hear the dying words of the newspaper editor.

It isn’t long before Hopalong Cassidy meets the Queen of Mesa Grande, Miss Lilly Marsh, and Miss Lilly wants to give Hopalong, the new Sheriff, a drink of her saloon’s finest wine. Now, anyone who knows Hopalong knows that he doesn’t drink alcohol, but he has a gun to his back with orders to drink with Lilly or get killed. Hopalong ponders for a moment and then tells Lilly that he will drink with her if he can drink what he wants to drink instead of the wine. With the whole saloon watching, Hopalong Cassidy asks the bartender for a tumbler glass and a bottle of straight whiskey. As we watch, Hopalong slowly fills the tumbler with whiskey right to the top rim before lifting his glass in a toast to Lilly, with her glass of wine . . . . Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
