Dishonor among Thieves and the Apple Pie

One of my best friends is a retired Sheriff's Deputy, and he is usually quick to tell me about the 'old days' of law enforcement . . . . A very different atmosphere than today's law officer faces. His boss once shook his head in disbelief over some of his antics and told him that if it wasn't for the badge on his shirt he would be on the other side of the bars . . . . There wasn't much difference between him and the bad guys . . . . . Well, I'm not sure that was true, but it was very different years ago. One time the deputies asked for a raise in salary and it was denied because there was no more money in the budget for the deputies . . . . But there was enough money to pay for new and expensive landscaping around the offices and jail . . . . So every evening when it was very dark around the building, every deputy entering or leaving the building would stop and pee on those very expensive flowers and bushes that kept them from getting a raise . . . . Soon all of the expensive landscaping was shriveling and dying for some unknown reason . . . . In this cowboy adventure bad guy Nevada and his buddy Weary, played by Buster Crabbe and Syd Saylor, are on the wrong side of the law, but when push comes to shove they help the Sheriff foil the plans of a horse thief. As the adventure opens outlaw and horse thief Les Setter is robbing the town bank, and as they ride out of town with the Sheriff hot on their trail, Nevada and Weary watch them ride. Nevada figures that he knows the spot where the bank robbers will hide from the posse, so he and Weary ride out and steal the bank money from the outlaws. Now the Sheriff will be hunting down the horse-thief bank robbing outlaws while Nevada and his buddy will have the money and escape to South America for a good time. Unfortunately the Sheriff finds Nevada and takes the bank money from them before they escape and leave the territory. As Nevada and Weary roam the west in search of their next adventure they stumble across the horse-thieving outlaw Les Setter once again, and this time the horse thief is impersonating a horse buyer for the Army, and is about to steal a large herd of horses from the ranchers in the area, and on top of that, he frames Nevada and Weary as horse thieves to get them out of the way. But for a freshly baked apple pie, our good bad guys would face a rope . . . . Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
