What Rhymes with Married?

As this detective mystery opens English gentleman Hugh 'Bulldog' Drummond is writing a poem to his new girlfriend Phyllis, who he asked to marry him after knowing her for an hour. Drummond calls his butler Tenny and asks him for a word that rhymes with 'married' and Tenny, with his formal British butler accent quickly replies, 'Harried.' When Drummond tells Tenny that 'harried' doesn't go with 'married' Tenny wisely replies that Drummond is speaking with the voice of inexperience. Then the lady in question, Phyllis Clavering, played by actress Louise Campbell, arrives with a Scotland Yard pal of Drummonds - Colonel Neilson, played by legendary actor John Barrymore. Soon after we are introduced to all of the good guys we meet the villain Mikhail Valdin and his sister-in-law Irena Soldanis, who want to kill Drummond because he sent Mikhail's brother and Irena's husband to the gallows for a past crime. They manage to kidnap Drummond's new girlfriend and start sending him cryptic rhymes and coded clues to find his girlfriend. They plan on leading Drummond on a wild chase for his new lady, and when he finally finds her, they will kill them both. John Barrymore, as the Scotland Yard Inspector, is warned not to get involved or the girlfriend will be killed immediately, but he dons several clever disguises and manages to follow along without Drummond or his side-kick Algy (played by Reginald Denny) and butler Tenny from knowing. After a chase to Limehouse and a fishing village Drummond and Algy finally find the girlfriend, but are trapped in a locked basement room with poison gas slowly filling the room and sending them to a slow and painful death. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter on it and enjoy the show.
