Bulldog Drummond Gets Married . . . almost!
If you are a fan of Bulldog Drummond you know that a recurring theme is his pending marriage to Phyllis Clavering which always gets interrupted by a new mystery to solve. In this adventure he has the rings for the ceremony and is about to journey to Paris and then to Switzerland to be married and at his new wife's request never again chase around the country sleuthing out a mystery. Yeah, like that's gonna happen! Keeping Bulldog Drummond away from a good mystery is like keeping the cats away from the milk. Drummond is visiting his friend at Scotland Yard, Colonel Neilson, played by the legendary John Barrymore, to make sure that he is ready to come with him to the wedding in Switzerland. When Drummond gets to Scotland Yard he meets a Japanese man who is also there to visit the Colonel and discovers that Colonel Neilson and Scotland Yard are about to be thrust into a spy adventure revolving around a new and powerful explosive called Haxtonite, invented by Sir John Haxton. Foreign governments are eager to get their hands on the powerful new weapon and before we know it Bulldog Drummond, along with his inimitable butler Tenny, played expertly by E.E. Clive, and his chum Algy Longworth, played by Reginald Denny, are off on a trail of murder and spies aboard a train from London to Paris . . . . Yes, I said train . . . half a century before the tunnel will be built under the English Channel. It seems that 1937 England has trains that roll to the coast and then chug aboard a steam ship to be ferried across to the Continent, then chug off the ship back onto the rail lines destined for Paris . . . very cool! I wish I had been alive then to experience that kind of adventure, but watching on the big screen is just about as good, I guess. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and travel with me aboard the train of death with amateur detective Bulldog Drummond and his wedding party.
