Bulldog Drummond Gets Married . . . almost!
On 16 August 1944 during some of the toughest fighting of World War Two, Navy Lieutenant John Richard Cox, Jr. was serving on a minesweeper off the coast of France, clearing the way ahead of larger ships full of soldiers preparing to land and fight. The U.S.S. YMS-24 hit a mine and the bow of the ship was blown away, killing the commanding officer. Realizing that he could not save the ship, Cox directed the removal of the wounded and risked his life by entering every compartment in search of missing trapped men.
Suddenly another mine exploded under the stern of a rescue ship that had pulled alongside Lieutenant Cox’s sinking ship. Lieutenant Cox jumped into the water between the two ships and rescued an injured sailor who was tossed into the water and in danger of drowning. For those actions, Lieutenant John Richard Cox, Jr. was awarded the Navy Cross by the U.S. Navy, and the French Croix de Guerre.
Seven years earlier Lieutenant John Richard Cox, Jr. starred in this movie under his acting name, John Howard. In this adventure he is an English gentleman about town who is always getting mixed up with murders and other crimes. His best friend and side-kick is played by Reginald Denny, and the Scotland Yard Inspector is played by John Barrymore.
As our adventure opens Bulldog Drummond, played by John Howard, is on the streets of London, peering into a drain in the middle of the sidewalk into which he has accidentally dropped a small box containing the wedding rings for himself and his intended. How can he retrieve his wedding rings from the bottom of the drain? Find an American in the gathering crowd, of course! Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
