Killed by a Lion

Oaky, before I tell you about the lion and his dinner, I have a little quiz for you about one of the actors in this story. He was born in Chihuahua, Mexico . . . as a youth in Southern California he was a sidewalk preacher and played in the band for famous lady evangelist Aimee Semple McPhearson. Cecil B. Demille was his father-in-law . . . he studied architecture with the famous Frank Lloyd Wright and the two became lifelong friends. When he mentioned to Wright that he enjoyed acting, Frank Lloyd Wright encouraged him to give it a try, and the rest, as they say, is history (who the heck are 'they' . . . does anyone really know?). He replaced Marlon Brando in the Broadway play Streetcar Named Desire and was so impressive that he was encouraged to get into the movies. He is an Oscar winning actor who acted with more fellow Oscar winners than any other Oscar winner - 28 male Oscar winners and 18 female Oscar winners were in movies with this fellow. His second Oscar was won for a measly 23 minute part, but it was so powerful that he easily won the Oscar. When an older John Barrymore was very ill and needed an immediate blood transfusion it was this fellow who gladly donated blood. In this British spy adventure the very young Anthony Quinn, the answer to my quiz, is a double agent working for the British Consul in Morocco and also as a henchman for the foreign spy who has kidnapped a high Scotland Yard official. The spy wants to learn the secret of a new British weapon - a radio wave death ray. The adventure comes to a thrilling climax in the lion filled courtyard of the evil spy Richard Lane, played by J. Carrol Naish, and the bullets are flying . . . Bulldog Drummond and J. Carrol Naish are fist-fighting to the end . . . Scotland Yard Colonel Neilsen, played by H.B. Warner, is tied to a tree just out of reach of the hungry lion . . . Bulldog's fiance is in the nearby bushes with Tenny the butler . . . the lion is very hungry . . . and one of our characters is about to become dinner. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter on it and enjoy the show.
