The Widow and the Outlaws
In this adventure of Hopalong Cassidy we join Hoppy and Lucky as they ride towards Cactus Springs, where their old friend Windy Halliday has just been appointed Marshall. Fortunately Cactus Springs is a quiet little town without any crime to speak of.
There is one big cattle ranch in Cactus Springs that is owned by Widow Mary Joyce, who has a little boy named Joey. Marshall Windy Halliday has been telling little Joey so many stories about the famous Hopalong Cassidy from the Bar 20 Ranch that little Joey even named his dog ‘Hoppy’ after the legendary outlaw fighting cowboy.
When Hopalong Cassidy arrives at Cactus Springs to visit his old friend Windy, the widow lady thinks he is an outlaw and holds him at gunpoint. Marshal Windy is up the street talking with Lucky Jenkins, and when they see the widow lady aiming her rifle at Hopalong Cassidy they run to his aid . . . .
No . . . . . They do not run to his aid . . . .
They watch with smiles on their faces as Hoppy tussles with the ornery widow to convince her not to shoot him.
It turns out that the widow lady is not really a widow. Her husband is in prison and she only tells folk she is a widow so that little Joey will not discover what a terrible outlaw his father really is. Unfortunately her outlaw husband has escaped from prison and is about to get a gang together to steal all of her cattle.
The widow lady in this story is actress Charlotte Wynters, who in real life married actor Barton MacLane. Together they ran their own cattle ranch in the Sierra Nevada foothills, and after her husband’s death she went on to run the ranch herself for more than thirty years until her death. She was in real life a cattle rancher just like her character in this story.
Bullets will fly and men will die as Hopalong Cassidy and Marshal Windy Halliday clean up Cactus Springs and keep the widow ranch lady from losing her cattle. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
