The Chinese Gaucho

Hopalong Cassidy always had two side-kicks, one was usually a young and eager cowboy and the other was most often Gabby Hayes, an old, bearded comic cowboy. This adventure includes Russell Hayden as the young cowboy, but instead of an old grizzled cowboy, the second character that helps Cassidy is the well known Oriental actor Sidney Toler.

Fans of old movies know him as the actor who most often played the character Charlie Chan, famous Oriental detective. Before I say more, I'm confident that some sharp movie fan will have already decided that I lied in a previous sentence. Did you spot my fib?

In this movie, filmed only a couple of months after Sidney Toler's first Charlie Chan movie, he is a Spanish gaucho from Argentina, and you may think that he still has an Oriental accent as he speaks . . . . So is Sidney Toler of Oriental heritage or Spanish heritage? You know he surely isn't a Scotsman, right? . . . . Wrong . . . . His father was a Missouri trotting horse rancher, and the family heritage was mostly from Scotland. Sidney Toler was born in Missouri and spoke American English as well as any Missouri boy.

Young Sidney Toler began acting at the age of seven in a production of Tom Sawyer, and before making motion pictures he was a baritone for an opera company and a well-respected Broadway actor, and even wrote and directed a couple of Broadway plays.

In 1938 Warner Oland, the actor playing the part of Charlie Chan, died and a search for another actor to become Charlie Chan began. Thirty four actors did a screen test and none of them was 'right' for the part. Then Scottish Sidney Toler tested for the part and his style of speaking broken-English was exactly what the studio wanted and within a couple of days shooting began on Charlie Chan in Honolulu.

This appearance as a Spanish cowboy is one of his last appearances as any character that was not Oriental. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
