Imitation of Life

Some movie stars are completely different in their real life than they are in their movie roles, and sometimes what you see on screen is the same person that you meet at the store or over the back yard fence. Charles Frederick Gebhart, known in movies as Buck Jones, was made of tougher stuff in his real life than even in his tough cowboy western adventures. As a teenager he joined the U.S. Army and was wounded in action in the Philippines and released from service, but after recovering he promptly joined the Army again. After his army service he worked at a ranch and became a champion bronco buster and when World War I broke out he trained horses for the Army. At one point during his motion picture career he received more fan mail than any other actor. Buck Jones died tragically in Boston in the infamous Coconut Grove Disaster of November 28, 1942 that was told in the television show Alarm. In this movie, filmed near the end of his great cowboy years, Buck Jones is a wandering ranch hand that can't stay in one place for too long, but his best friend Ranny, played by Frank Rice, wants to settle down in one place, so they part ways. One day Buck Jones, as cowboy Sim Baldwin, gets a letter from his best friend telling about the Shadow Ranch that he is working at. The young lady who owns the ranch is being forced off her land by an evil town man who is rustling her cattle and scaring off her ranch hands, and Ranny asks his drifter buddy to come help the gal save her ranch. As Buck Jones gets to town he is just in time to witness the grave side services for his best friend Ranny, and tough as nails Buck Jones sets out to both avenge his best friend's death and help the little lady from Shadow Ranch keep her ranch out of the hands of the evil town dude who is rustling her cattle and trying to get her to sell her ranch . . . of course we don't need to be Houdini to figure out that the killer of best friend Ranny is the same man who is trying to force the little lady off her ranch. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
