The Man in Black
Movie stars of the old days were part of a very small and close-knit family. In 1956 John Wayne starred in "The Searchers", Directed by legendary John Ford. In the closing scene of the movie John Wayne stood tall and proud with his arms folded, holding his right elbow with his left hand . . . . Watching from the sidelines two of the actors in the cast silently wept . . . . Actress Olive Carey and her son Harry Carey Jr. . . . . Olive's husband Harry Carey had passed a few years earlier, and the pose by John Wayne was in homage to the first cowboy superstar of motion pictures, Harry Carey. Harry Carey often stood with his left hand cupped around his right elbow on and off screen . . . . Almost a trademark . . . . As a young man Harry Carey was laid up with pneumonia after a boating mishap, and during those idle times he wrote a play. He produced and starred in that play that was performed in all the large cities of the country for more than three years. In 1909 as silent moving pictures were still in the experimental stage he started acting for the first motion picture company in America, American Mutoscope and Biograph Company in Jersey City, New Jersey. In 1918 he would star in a movie called 'Straight Shooting' . . . . with a new young man named John Ford directing a motion picture for the first time. John Ford would go on to direct some of the big screen's most famous movies, like the 1956 movie with John Wayne, Olive Carey and Harry Carey Jr. . . . . In this western adventure he is a lawman pretending to be a famous outlaw . . . . He is a fast-shooting stranger in town . . . . A town that is being vexed by a black-hooded night rider that is robbing ranchers and bankers at night . . . . . Before he even gets to the town he happens to meet a Mexican caballero ranch hand and a green-horn from Altoonie, Pennsylvania who wanted to see what the Wild West was all about, at the suggestion of a fellow named Greeley . . . Horace Greeley . . . . Anyway . . . . The Sheriff knows that Harry Carey, dressed in black and appearing to be an outlaw, is really a lawman, but everyone else thinks he is an outlaw, including the two henchmen who are helping the mysterious and unknown night rider . . . . It will be up to the man in black, Harry Carey, to discover the identity of the night rider and bring him to justice . . . . Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
