Happy Birthday Marines

Two battalions of Continental Marines were formed on November 10, 1775, the first . . . the proud . . . the tip of the sword . . . U.S. Marines. This motion picture was released ten days after that birthday in 1934. To celebrate we'll watch the mis-adventures of one of the dog-gondest Marines you ever met. His grandpa was a storied Marine, his father was a renowned Marine, and today in 1934 Wild Bill Traylor, played by William Haines, is a Marine Lieutenant who will take us on one very wild ride. Wild Bill Traylor is the 'rules were made to be broken' Playboy of the Marines who is followed around the world by a hot little Latin girl named Rosita, who is so much in love with this playboy Marine that she is blind to all other men. As we meet Lieutenant Traylor he is being assigned to serve under tough 'by the book' Marine Ned Benton, played by Conrad Nagel. These two very different Marines want the same woman and pretty little Dorothy, played by Esther Ralston, wants the excitement she has with Wild Bill, but also enjoys the security of 'by the book' Benton. Up until the middle of this story it looks like Wild Bill will win everything he wants, including Dorothy, but suddenly he is forced to resign from the Marines ending three generations of proud heritage. How can this happen to one of our leading men at this point in the show? Isn't this show supposed to be about the Marines? What the heck is going on here? This Marine comedy adventure is getting serious and things don't look good for Wild Bill and his personal butler Edgar Kennedy. We may be in for a battle that even the Marines cannot win . . . or maybe we'll see how those jarhead patriots got their reputation. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter on it and enjoy the show.
