A Walk in the Park . . . With Gangsters

There is nothing more pleasant than to watch two youngsters in love, walking dreamily through Central Park. Tommy and Annabelle are in love and about to get married. They are walking on a star filled evening and talking about how Tommy has finally saved enough money to get married.

Annabelle is suddenly worried that when Tommy pulled his handkerchief out of his pocket while they were in the subway that someone might have stolen his wallet. With a startled look of fear Tommy quickly reaches for the wallet in his back pocket and . . . . . It is there, along with the money that will allow him to begin married life with Annabelle.

Unfortunately, a gangster and his henchman are standing in the shadows watching and listening, and Rocky, played by Eduardo Ciannelli, robs the two youngsters of their hard-earned savings.

Eduardo Ciannelli was born on a resort island near Naples, Italy, and he became a celebrated baritone opera singer at La Scala. While touring with the opera in America he took a small acting role in a Broadway play and he soon abandoned the opera for acting. He was most famous as the gangster in this movie and the 1936 movie Winterset. Some folk thought that he looked a bit like the gangster Lucky Luciano, and with his rugged face and delicious Italian accent when he spoke English, he was a natural gangster type for the crime stories of the 1930’s like this one.

The other major gangster in this story is Chester Morris, as the wealthy, society swinging bachelor who was secretly the head of the Morton gang. Chester Morris would become more famous on radio and television a few years after this movie when he played the crime-fighting jewel thief Boston Blackie. You can listen to some of the radio programs at Jimbo Radio presents the Boston Blackie radio show, and you can watch some of the television series at Jimbo TV presents Boston Blackie.

Two youngsters in love meet gangsters in Central Park, and before the closing credits they will become entangled in the biggest crime gang in New York City and possibly headed for the electric chair, all because of a romantic walk in the park on a moon lit evening. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
