Blame it on the Casbah

If I teased you about a movie that takes place in a mysterious and dangerous Arabian city in North Africa with love and death and intrigue . . . and memories of Paris . . . . You might think of the 1942 movie Casablanca . . . . But there is a movie with more suspense . . . . More sultry love . . . . More danger . . . An ending that you will never forget . . . . Never ever forget . . . A movie that was produced several years before Casablanca . . . . Can I bring myself to say it is a better movie? I will let you decide that, my friend. Our exotic adventure opens in the police station in Algiers, where a determined policeman from Paris is telling the local police that he will bring the famous jewel thief of Paris to justice . . . . Master jewel thief Pepe le Moko is played by Charles Boyer, and he is hiding out in the Casbah . . . . A neighborhood in Algiers filled with the gritty souls who live in a place where even the police are not eager to enter . . . . A place where there is a law of the streets that even the police respect . . . . And Pepe le Moko is the king of that neighborhood. The master jewel thief has a posse of henchmen around him to protect him, in addition to the loyalty of every person living in the neighborhood. There is one Algiers policeman who is friends with Pepe, and who openly tells Pepe that one day he will arrest him, but not this day. Ines is the Casbah girl with eyes that can look right through Pepe with desire that burns in her heart. Like most of the residents of the Casbah, Ines would give her life for Pepe . . . . Unless he betrayed her love for him with another . . . . Like the visitor from Paris, Gabriella, or ‘Gaby’ as she likes to be called. Dripping with pearls and diamonds, Gaby is played by Hedy Lamarr. Hedy Lamarr has the reputation of being the most beautiful woman ever to be in movies from the Golden Age of motion pictures. When MGM founder Louis B. Mayer saw her performance in the European silent movie Ekstasy he immediately offered her enough money to entice her to come to Hollywood, and this is her first Hollywood movie, and one of her best. Gaby and Pepe fall in love with each other while all of the police in Algiers are trying to get Pepe to leave the Casbah neighborhood so that they can safely capture him . . . . They know that as long as he stays inside the Casbah they will not be able to touch him. Can his mind-bending love for Gaby cause him to throw caution to the wind and put him into the hands of the police? Will his love for Gaby and her love for him be stronger and smarter than any policeman? Who will win in the end . . . . . Love or the Law? Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
