Blame it on the Casbah

If I teased you about a movie that takes place in a mysterious and dangerous Arabian city in North Africa with love and death and intrigue . . . and memories of Paris . . . . You might think of the 1942 movie Casablanca. Would you believe that there is a movie with more suspense, more sultry love, more danger, and an ending that you will never forget? . . . . Never ever forget. Could you even imagine that this movie that was produced several years before Casablanca. . . . Can I bring myself to say it is a better movie? I will let you decide that, my friend.

Our exotic adventure opens in the police station in Algiers, where a determined policeman from Paris is telling the local police that he will bring the famous jewel thief of Paris to justice. Master jewel thief Pepe le Moko is played by Charles Boyer, and he is hiding out in the Casbah, a neighborhood in Algiers filled with the gritty souls who live in a place where even the police are not eager to enter.

The Casbah is a place where there is a law of the streets that even the police respect, and Paris jewel thief Pepe le Moko is the king of that place. Pepe has a posse of henchmen around him to protect him, in addition to the loyalty of every person living in the neighborhood. There is one Algiers policeman who is friends with Pepe, and who openly tells Pepe that one day he will arrest him, but not this day.

Pepe is living the good life in his own little kingdom and all is well until a lady visiting from Paris, who is dripping with tempting jewels, enters the Casbah and meets Pepe. Matinee movie superstar Hedy Lamarr is Gabriella, and her beauty may intrigue Pepe even more than her jewels. This is Hedy Lamarr’s first Hollywood motion picture, and the question we will encounter is, Who will conquer Pepe, Beauty or the Law? ¬†Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.
