From Professor to Panhandler to Millionaire

In the mid 1930's the world was in the deepest part of the Great Depression. There were charity soup kitchens that tried to feed the hungry families that couldn't find work or housing. The country had an ever growing population of hobo's who tramped around for a bit of food or lodging. At the same time, there were glaring islands of wealthy folk who were doing quite well, and the contrast between them and the working poor was never greater. Hollywood churned out many stories about the people of the Great Depression between 1930 and the beginning of the Second World War, including a host of comedies with a message. Films like the 1933 In The Money about a wealthy family that lost all their money, the 1934 business story Beggars in Ermine, the 1934 story In Love with Life, and another 1934 tale A Successful Failure, and one of my all-time favorite Great Depression comedies My Man Godfrey in 1936. This 1935 adventure continues in that triumphant style of a small man with few assets against the big wealthy establishment not only surviving but making the 'rags to riches' conversion in the face of defeat. In this telling, a small university professor is fired for teaching that the wealthy people should give the little guys a helping hand once in a while. The wealthy donors to the university accuse him of pandering to Communism and anti-American ideas, and he is relieved of his teaching duties and winds up with a handful of hobos . . . and an idea. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with warm melted butter on it and watch the poor little professor not only make a million bucks but get the affections of the pretty rich girl who discovers that his ideas are worth millions!
