School Days and Stolen Jewels

William Thompson Hay, an educated engineer, was the noted astronomer who first discovered the spot on the planet Saturn in 1933. Ahhh, but that is not what the world remembers Will Hay for. Born in Stockton-on-Tees, County Durham in the North East part of England, he went to the movies one day and watched W.C. Fields juggling. He was intrigued and taught himself to juggle. Somehow his funny-bone took over and he discovered a passion for comedy. Will Hay only acted in about twenty motion pictures, but they are among the funniest British comedies ever created. In this early 1935 story, two years after his noted planetary discovery, he is a muddled but always victorious school teacher, a part that he would play often in his movie career. As Doctor Alexander Smart, M.A., with the help of a pick-pocket and forger he gets the head master position at the Narkover school for boys, where the boys learn more about gambling, stealing and mischief than about reading, writing and arithmetic. When one of the directors of the school tries to frame him for stealing Lady Dorking's necklace, Smart Alec . . . errr . . . . Dr. Alec Smart has the upper hand over Colonel Crableigh, as well as thief Faker Brown and his pick-pocket son Cyril Brown and the precious jewels will end up safe and sound with Lady Dorking again. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with warm melted butter and watch the first motion picture to show carpet surfing, and the breakout smash hit that put Will Hay on the path to comedy history.
